In this way the engineers want to gain time to work on the deficits of the car in the factory. The team will then once again be back on track in the first week of March. The loss of track time next week will be made up for in the third week of March, shortly before all the stuff will be transported to Australia. Possible venues: Silverstone, Jerez or Portimao.
The role allocation in the team is a clear one. This week Alonso and Piquet both get two days of testing but during the rest of the testprogramme Alonso will test another 8 times while Piquet will only come in action for another 3 days. Though the Brasilian will be granted the final 50 km shakedown at Silverstone before the chassis' will be flown to Australia.
There are already a few updates to the car this week. The fins underneeth the nose have been lengthened and some modifications to the geometry of the car (rear suspension probably) have been made in order to improve traction.
A 'task force' is trying to find out as to what extent the problems are aerodynamically or mechanically related. Perhaps Renault exaggerated with slimming down the car. It's the lightest car that's ever been built. When KERS isn't on board there's 60 kg of ballast to play with.
Symonds: ''Traditionally we've actually always built relatively heavy cars. In order to meet the weight that was aimed for we had to to re-define our standards for the rigidity of the parts on the car.''
On the first day this week Piquet tested KERS. Two weeks ago Renault first tried the hybrid system at Kemble aiport, Piquet: ''Everything worked flawlessly.''
However, each time the car comes into the pits the mechanics have to wait a long time: they can only touch the car when the green light appears on the lollipop (which takes about 10 seconds).
In Red Bull's case things are even more rigorous, in the pitbox there's a special barrier which prevents people from touching the car by accident. Newey groans about the situation: ''I now have to wear these rubber gloves because every now and then I examine certain things on the car when it comes back into the box.''
